Lee Westwood and Ross McGowan can help Europe win back Ryder Cup

Lee Westwood and Ross McGowan were fierce but friendly competitors in the final round of the Dubai World Championship on Sunday, inspiring each other to a couple of seriously profitable rounds.

And, as two of the more thirsty members of Chubby Chandler’s (notoriously thirsty) stable, you can be sure they were similarly committed when it came to the rounds that followed.

Westwood and McGowan would be a formidable Ryder Cup partnership too, in a team that Colin Montgomerie must be seriously excited about.

Because Rory McIlroy’s third place finish in Dubai means that Europe now has six players in the world’s top ten, for the first time ever. And considering how skewed the rankings are towards American players (hence Steve Stricker’s continued presence in the top three) that’s a real marker of the strength in depth available to Monty next September, when he tries to win back the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor.

Here’s the new top 10: 1. Woods. 2. Mickelson. 3. Stricker. 4. Westwood. 5 Casey. 6. Harrington. 7. Stenson. 8 Garcia. 9. Perry. 10. McIlroy.

At this stage, it seems inconceivable that Ian Poulter, Martin Kaymer and Ross Fisher won’t join that six in Wales. And if that half-dozen make it, Monty will then have to choose his three wild cards from a hugely impressive group of possible debutants – McGowan, Alvaro Quiros, Soren Kjeldsen, Simon Dyson and Francesco Molinari – and more experienced heads – Robert Karlsson, Luke Donald, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Graeme McDowell.

They’re unbeatable, from where I’m sitting. And for what’s it’s worth here’s my 12 for 2010. Westwood, Garcia, McIlroy, Harrington, Garcia, Casey, Kaymer, Fisher, Poulter, McGowan, Quiros, Molinari.
